What Tie Rod Ends Do
On rack-and-pinion systems, inner tie rod ends connect to the steering rack itself, while outer tie rod ends connect that linkage to the steering knuckle at the wheel. Both use a ball-and-socket design that allows the rod to pivot smoothly as the suspension moves and the wheels turn through their full steering range.
A protective rubber boot keeps grease inside the joint and contaminants out. Once that boot cracks or tears, grease escapes and dirt works its way in, and the joint wears out far faster than it otherwise would have.
