A diesel engine is an internal combustion engine that uses the heat of compression to start ignition to burn the fuel, which is injected into the combustion chamber. This is in contrast to spark-ignition engines such as a petrol engine or gas engine, which uses a spark plug to ignite an air-fuel mixture. Diesel engines are manufactured in two-stroke and four-stroke versions.

Gasoline internal combustion engines and diesel engines have a lot in common, but they differ in a few significant ways, which can sometimes lead to trouble. Many of the common diesel problems are caused by the diesel fuel injector. The fuel injection system on a diesel engine is one of the engine's most complex system; it is also the most prone to problems. The gasoline engine uses a throttle body or a port-injection system, where the diesel engine uses a direct-injection system. The direct-injection system is much more complicated than the throttle body or port system and therefore more likely to experiencing problems.
